What transpired at Eurovision 2026?

The 70th Eurovision Song Contest (2026), held in Vienna, the capital of Austria, unfolded under the shadow of a boycott. The grand winner of this year's competition was Dara, representing Bulgaria with her upbeat and catchy song 'Bangaranga'. Initially not considered among the favorites in the betting odds, Dara won over both the national juries and the public vote (televote), bringing home a historic victory for her country with a total of 516 points. Finland, initially touted as one of the favorites and widely expected to win, ended up in 6th place.

Israel (Noam Bettan Michelle), which competed amidst intense debates and protests, still managed to secure high scores from the public vote. Romania's contestant, Alexandra Căpitănescu, left audiences in awe with her powerful performance and gained a large fan base, securing 3rd place with her song 'Choke Me'. Among the Big Five countries, the United Kingdom ended up at the bottom of the leaderboard (25th place) with just one point for Look Mum No Computer's song 'Eins, Zwei, Drei', marking the biggest disappointment of the night. The contest made Eurovision history, not only due to the wide point gap between the jury and public votes but also because of Bulgaria's unexpected yet well-deserved victory.

Eurovision 2026 witnessed one of the largest boycotts in the competition's history. Five countries decided to completely withdraw from the contest this year in protest of Israel's participation. In addition to Iceland, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Slovenia, Spain, one of the Big Five, also chose not to participate this year.
