In a statement made by the Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines via X, it was reported that a portion of the national electricity grid had been disabled and serious problems were being experienced in energy production.

The statement indicated that planned outages would be implemented in approximately 70% of the country during peak electricity consumption hours, and the following assessment was given:

'Unit 6 of the Nuevitas Thermal Power Plant, Unit 3 of the Rente Plant, and the fuel oil power plant have been removed from the National Energy System. In addition, 9 out of 16 thermal power plant units in the country are currently out of service due to malfunction or maintenance.'

According to reports in the Cuban media, the main reasons for the problems in the national energy system include fuel shortages and difficulties in procuring spare parts necessary for power plants due to the US embargo.

On January 30, Donald Trump had signed a presidential decree that proposed the imposition of additional customs duties on all products coming from countries that provide or sell oil to Cuba.

The White House, on the other hand, had clarified that the purpose of this decision was to protect the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States against Cuba's 'harmful policies and activities'.

Trump had announced on February 1 that talks had been initiated to reorganize the oil supply with the Cuban government, however, the Cuban side had refuted this claim.

Following these developments, the Cuban government had activated emergency measures to maintain the system without an external oil flow.
