In an interview for Tom Shone's book The Nolan Variations, Nolan expressed how proud he is of the film.
He explained that the making of Insomnia, which was his first major studio film, was a deeply personal experience for him. "I’m proud of that film. Every now and then I meet a filmmaker, and usually, it’s that film they’re most interested in," he said.
The film, starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Hilary Swank, tells the story of Detective Will Dormer (Pacino), a police officer investigating the murder of a young girl in a small town in Alaska. While struggling with insomnia, Dormer must also confront the secrets of his past. Nolan regards this film as the least appreciated work among all his films.
