Caught on Camera: Man Captures Devastating Moments While Escaping Venezuela Earthquake
Predicting when and where natural disasters will strike may be impossible, but the wave of panic they create leaves the same devastating impact worldwide. Particularly in regions with unstable building stocks, the real danger begins immediately after the shock, turning into a life-or-death struggle.
Following a severe quake in Venezuela, a man trapped in a high-rise apartment recorded his escape struggle moment by moment. As he ran down the stairs, the destruction grew worse on each floor, prompting a reconsideration of the issue of using stairs to escape during an earthquake.

Why is it dangerous to run to the stairs during an earthquake?
Rushing towards the stairs in panic during or immediately after an earthquake poses one of the most significant life-threatening risks. The primary reason for this is that stairs are structures added to buildings independently from the main load-bearing system, making them among the most vulnerable areas during tremors. Consequently, even if the building remains standing, the stairs can collapse within seconds. Moreover, since the destruction and weight are concentrated in the lower floors of buildings, attempting to descend the stairs equates to running towards the heart of danger. The impossibility of maintaining balance on the steps during a severe tremor, combined with the chaos caused by other people, can lead to being crushed or falling into the stairwell. In addition to all these, heavy concrete, brick, and plaster pieces falling from the ceilings and side walls of the stairwells can land directly on those trying to escape, causing fatal injuries. Therefore, the correct course of action is to adopt the drop, cover, and hold on position next to a safe piece of furniture during the tremor, and to only leave the building in a calm and controlled manner once the shaking has completely stopped.
