A geopolitical and economic independence struggle that could completely shift the balances in Southeast Asia is being waged beneath the surface. Cambodia, tired of being reliant on the ports and mercy of its long-time border neighbor Vietnam as it opens up to global markets, has initiated one of the biggest infrastructure moves in its history to break free from these shackles: A colossal artificial waterway, 180 kilometers long, is being built to directly connect the capital, Phnom Penh, to the Gulf of Thailand.

This $1.7 billion mega project, dubbed the Funan Techo Canal, is not just a logistics investment; it is, in the truest sense, a declaration of 'economic independence' for Cambodia.

The canal is set to span 180 kilometers in length, with a width of 100 meters and a depth of 4.7 meters.

It's been designed to comfortably accommodate the massive river barges that Cambodia currently utilizes in its inland waters.

Positioned south of Phnom Penh, it will link the Mekong River to the country's coastline, thereby providing a direct route for inland production to reach the sea.

Up until now, Cambodia has been heavily reliant on the ports in Vietnam's Mekong Delta, particularly the Saigon Port Complex, for sending goods to global markets or importing raw materials.

This situation was leading to Vietnam establishing a persistent mechanism of political and economic pressure over Cambodia's trade.

Especially around Phnom Penh, which has become a global hub in textile and clothing production, the massive industry faced bureaucratic obstacles and humiliations from Vietnamese officials while exporting its valuable goods. The new canal, however, is set to break this cycle of pressure by diversifying Cambodia's trade partners.

One of the biggest winners of the project will indeed be the local producers and farmers from Cambodia.

Until now, farmers who were unable to sell their products directly to the world due to logistical inadequacies were forced to sell their crops to Vietnamese merchants at prices far below their value. With the completion of the canal, Cambodia will open its own products directly to the world from its own ports. Consequently, the profit margin of local producers will skyrocket, bringing an end to the monopoly era of Vietnamese intermediaries.

On the other hand, the canal project has triggered a significant unease and alarm in Vietnam. What truly concerns Vietnam is the fact that this colossal canal is being financed and constructed by Chinese infrastructure companies. The likelihood of China establishing new container terminals and port complexes on Cambodian coasts in the future could potentially shift the balance of power in the region entirely towards the Beijing-Phnom Penh axis.
