Brad Pitt’s Historical War Epic ‘Troy’ – Coming to Netflix in June

Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt opens June on Netflix with a bang with his 2004 epic historical war film starrer, ‘Troy’ along with a bunch of films and shows that are arriving on the same day as well. 

The war between the ancient kingdoms of Troy and Sparta is depicted in this epic based on Homer's 'Iliad.' While visiting Spartan King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) falls in love with Menelaus' wife Helen (Diane Kruger) and returns to Troy with her. After defeating every army in Greece, Menelaus' brother, King Agamemnon (Brian Cox), exploits his brother's rage as an excuse to make war on Troy, the last country standing in the way of his hegemony over the Aegean Sea.

‘Troy’ Storyline

The year is 1250 B.C. Late in the Bronze Age. After Paris, the Trojan prince, persuades Helen, Queen of Sparta, to abandon her husband, Menelaus, and sail with him back to Troy, two growing nations conflict. When Menelaus learns that his wife has been kidnapped by the Trojans, he seeks his brother Agamemnon for assistance. Agamemnon sees this as a chance to gain power. So they set off for Troy with 1,000 ships carrying 50,000 Greeks. The Greeks are able to overcome the Trojans for the first time thanks to Achilles' assistance. They are, however, brought to a halt by Hector, Prince of Troy.

‘Troy’ Cast

The film features an ensemble cast led by Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Orlando Bloom. Brendan Gleeson, Diane Kruger, and Brian Cox are also in the film among others.

‘Troy’ is directed by Wolfgang Petersen and written by David Benioff. Produced by units in Malta, Mexico and Britain's Shepperton Studios.

‘Troy’ Box-Office Reception

'Troy' grossed more than $497 million worldwide, making it the 60th highest-grossing picture of all time. However, critics praised the film's entertainment value and Pitt's performance while condemning its plot, unfaithfulness to the Iliad itself, and whitewashing. It was the seventh highest-grossing film of 2004 and garnered a nomination for Best Costume Design at the 77th Academy Awards.
