The price per kilogram of pistachios has soared beyond 3,000 lira. Seizing this opportunity, fraudsters have started resorting to food scams. Experts have issued warnings about many products being sold as 'cheap sweets' in the market. Zeynep Geyik, a confectioner, cautioned, 'Don't jeopardize your health for the sake of cheap sweets,' revealing that peas and food coloring are being used as substitutes for pistachios.

The price of pistachios is burning a hole in the pocket. With the per kilogram price exceeding 3,000 TL, there has been a notable increase in food fraud concerning pistachios. It has been highlighted that food counterfeiters, seizing the opportunity presented by the soaring prices, are using crushed peanuts, heavy food coloring, and peas under the guise of 'pistachio dessert'. These deceptive methods, which mislead consumers based on appearance and color, pose a serious risk to public health.

Zeynep Geyik, a long-time confectioner based in Adana, has pointed out that there is a high risk of imitation and adulteration, particularly in baklava and pistachio sweets. Geyik, who mentioned that some businesses use peas and food coloring to cut costs, issued a warning to consumers to be cautious.
Geyik stated, 'Excessive and unconscious consumption of food coloring can cause gastrointestinal disorders, allergic reactions, and various health problems in the long run. The cost of high-quality pistachios is well known. Therefore, don't compromise your health by opting for cheap sweets. Cheap sweets can cost you your health. Don't skimp on sweets in the New Year either.'
