Mehmet Günsür Opens Up About Şehzade Mustafa's Execution Scene In Magnificent Century
Mehmet Günsür, who played Şehzade Mustafa in Magnificent Century (Muhteşem Yüzyıl), shared the story behind one of the series' most remembered scenes. Appearing on Pazar Sohbeti, the show Fatih Altaylı hosts on his YouTube channel, the actor was asked about claims that he could not recover for days after filming the execution scene. Here is what he said.

Mehmet Günsür said the whole team waited two years for Şehzade Mustafa's execution scene.
Speaking on Fatih Altaylı's YouTube channel, Mehmet Günsür explained that he had been waiting for the scene from the moment he started playing the character. Because Şehzade Mustafa's fate is known from the history books, it was clear from the start where the story would end.
According to Mehmet Günsür, he was not the only one waiting. For two years, the whole crew and the whole audience were waiting for the same moment. The actor said this carried 'a strange weight.'
For Mehmet Günsür, a father killing his son was a heavy burden, both emotionally and philosophically.
The actor said he had internalised the character so deeply over two years that the scene was not easy to shake off. 'A father killing his son is a huge event,' Mehmet Günsür said, underlining the weight of the moment.
He also agreed when Fatih Altaylı added that it happened 'under the influence of his wife,' and said the event had an existential side to it.
Mehmet Günsür described stepping into that scene as 'a very bad feeling' and said the cast experienced it first-hand on set.
The day after the episode aired, crowds at Şehzade Mustafa's tomb in Bursa forced it to close.
When the conversation turned to Bursa, Fatih Altaylı asked Mehmet Günsür whether he had ever visited Şehzade Mustafa's tomb. The actor said he had not: he had planned to go before the episode aired, but it never happened.
After that, a visit became almost impossible. According to Mehmet Günsür, the day after the episode showing Mustafa's death was broadcast, the tomb was so crowded that it had to be closed.
Fatih Altaylı joked that the actor had 'contributed to tourism in Bursa', a line that summed up how many people headed to the city to see the tomb in those days.
