Ayşegül Aldinç Says She Regrets Turning Down Şahsiyet Over a Kissing Scene
Turkish singer and actress Ayşegül Aldinç has revealed that she was once offered a role in the series Şahsiyet and turned it down, a decision she later came to regret. Speaking in an interview with journalist Ayşe Arman, Ayşegül Aldinç said the reason was a single kissing scene in the script. When she asked director Onur Saylak whether the scene could be left out and was told no, she walked away from the project. The series went on to win Haluk Bilginer an International Emmy.
Ayşegül Aldinç named Şahsiyet as one of the projects she regrets turning down.
Asked by Ayşe Arman about offers she had declined over her career, Ayşegül Aldinç said: 'There may be one or two jobs I turned down and later regretted.'
One of them, she explained, was Şahsiyet, directed by Onur Saylak. The sticking point was a kissing scene in the script. Ayşegül Aldinç stressed that she has no strict rule about such scenes: 'I don't really have Türkan Şoray-style rules. I just thought the show would be fine without that scene.'
The conversation that cost her the role lasted three sentences.
Ayşegül Aldinç said she had also considered a middle ground: 'We could have pretended to kiss, like in old Turkish films. It didn't have to be a real kiss.'
The meeting, however, did not go the way she expected. She described the moment like this: 'I asked, 'Can we do it without it?' He said, 'No.' I said, 'Fine, then I won't be in it.' And he said, 'Fine.' As simple as that!'
She also shared the lesson she took from it: 'You have to be careful about how you say things, because it can even change the direction of your life. Maybe I should have said it differently, or not said it at all.'
Şahsiyet won Haluk Bilginer an International Emmy.
Released on puhutv in 2018, Şahsiyet was written by Hakan Günday and directed by Onur Saylak. The series follows Agâh Beyoğlu, a retired courthouse clerk diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and quickly became one of the most talked-about Turkish streaming productions.
In 2019, it earned Haluk Bilginer the International Emmy Award for Best Performance by an Actor.
Ayşegül Aldinç acknowledged that success herself: 'Then the series really took off and won an award abroad.' Describing Onur Saylak as 'a really sweet man,' she closed with a joke: 'Who knows, if I had accepted it, how cool would that have been now!'
