Young Man Suffers Nightmare Night After Falling Asleep Next to His Smartphone
Many of us have made it a habit to scroll through social media in bed before sleep, and to keep our phones plugged in and tucked under our pillows or right next to us. However, the harrowing experience of 32-year-old Wiley Day from Alabama has demonstrated how this seemingly benign habit can turn into a deadly nightmare in a matter of seconds. The young man, who was struck by a 110-volt electric current, survived against million-to-one odds.
The chain of negligence behind this terrifying incident that has reverberated around the world, along with expert warnings, exposes the hidden danger lurking in your bedroom.
It all commenced when Wiley Day plugged his phone into an extension cord he had purchased from a discount store, just before retiring to bed for the night.
Day, some time after drifting off to sleep, found his metal dog tag necklace wedged between the exposed ends of a charger and an extension cord. Instantly, the metal necklace transformed into a massive electrical conductor.
Awakening to immense pain, numbness, and a horrific pressure around his neck, Day recounts the incident as follows:
'I remember thinking 'So this is how you die,' before my vision faded and the thunderous pounding of my heart filled my ears. It was the worst wake-up call you could ever have in your life. I had the taste of burnt wire in my mouth.'
In a desperate bid for freedom, Day managed to tear the chain from his neck, ripping into his skin in the process. His family, alerted by his screams, promptly rushed him to the hospital.
When the young man came to his senses, he discovered that his bed sheets were smoldering and pieces of flesh were torn from where the necklace had embedded into his neck.
Immediately transferred to the Trauma Burn Intensive Care Unit at the University of Alabama, Day suffered serious second and third degree burns on his neck, chest, and hand. Moreover, due to the pressure created by the electricity discharged from his body, there was tissue tearing in his left shoulder. Dr. Benjamin Fail, who examined him, stated, '100 volts of electricity is enough to kill a person. He was exposed to approximately 110 volts, he's incredibly fortunate to have survived.'
Following the incident, authorities refrained from making direct comments on the matter, instead opting to simply urge consumers to stick to using only original and approved Apple accessories.
However, the statistics suggest that the risk extends far beyond just the brand. According to data from the American Burn Association, extension cords used in homes are responsible for approximately 4,700 residential fires each year, resulting in dozens of fatalities.
Moreover, this incident is not a first on a global scale.
Previously, a young girl named Jackie Fedro had suffered second-degree burns on her neck due to wearing a metal necklace while her phone was charging. Meanwhile, in Australia, a pregnant woman woke up to severe burns on her arm after falling asleep with her phone plugged in. Tragically, in China, a woman lost her life as a result of an electric shock from a faulty charger.
Wiley Day, a behavior specialist working in a middle school, now carries the scars of burns on his body as a stark reminder of the horror he experienced. He shares this terrifying ordeal with everyone, especially his students, as a cautionary tale for the world.
Asserting, 'I know God saved me because my situation was a one in a million miracle,' Day sends out a warning to everyone with a habit of sleeping with their phone, urging them to keep their devices at a distance from their beds.
