Woman Graduates First in Class 38 Years After Beating Cancer
Nadide Kazmaz, a 57-year-old woman who had to pause her education at the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, which she entered in 1986, due to cancer, has triumphantly returned to complete her degree with top honors after a reprieve. Her graduation moments were captured on camera, marking a significant milestone in her life.
Nadide Kazmaz was compelled to leave university halfway through due to her battle with cancer.
At the age of 57, Nadide Kazmaz found herself back at the place she had to leave behind years ago. In 1986, she had secured a place in the Turkish Language and Literature Education department at Dokuz Eylul University's Buca Faculty of Education. However, her academic journey was abruptly cut short during her sophomore year when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, forcing her to abandon the education she dearly loved.
Following her treatment, life took her on a different path - she got married, had children, and even became a grandmother. Yet, despite the passing years, Kazmaz never let go of her passion for learning. Seizing the opportunity offered by a student amnesty in 2022, she made the decision to return to university.
Reflecting on her past, Kazmaz shared that the thought of freezing her registration never crossed her mind at the time of her diagnosis. 'Afterwards, I left school, got married, and started a family. Life carried on in this way. I have two daughters. One of them is a faculty member at the same university. She put a lot of pressure on me. My husband was also very supportive. He said, 'It would be good for you. You love literature and it's better than sitting at home.' My best grades were always in my field courses. With their encouragement, I decided to resume my studies,' she said.
He graduated as the top of his class, 38 years later.
After four years, Kazmaz reveled in the pride of graduating as the valedictorian among both his department and 1100 students.
Emphasizing how much his wife and daughters have helped him, Kazmaz concluded his words as follows:
'When I told my wife 'I'm coming home late from school', she would respond, 'No problem, I'll sort out the dinner.' We managed somehow. I have a daughter who is a Turkish language teacher, and I benefited greatly from her. She helped me with educational sciences. At this age, I'm not overly concerned about building a grand career. I have a grandchild who is 4.5 years old. If I can, I'll teach him. Perhaps, I might work in private schools.'
