Why You Should Stop Taking Your Smartphone into the Bathroom Immediately
Smartphones, which have become an inseparable part of our daily lives, are threatening our health and the lifespan of our devices without us even realizing it. Research has revealed that nearly half of all people are creating a massive breeding ground for bacteria and mold by using their phones in what is perceived to be a clean and hygienic room. Experts are urgently warning against this harmful habit, stating, 'It may seem harmless, but you are facing an invisible danger.'
That bad habit many people engage in daily: Taking their phones to the bathroom and toilet!
However, experts assert that this habit is taking a toll on both our health and mental well-being. Emily Robertson, an in-house specialist, points out that our phones act like a sponge, soaking up all the germs and bacteria that float around in the bathroom after we use the toilet. What's even more alarming is the danger that shower steam poses to our phone cases.
Highlighting that the warm and humid conditions of the bathroom provide a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, Robertson issues the following warning:
'The humidity in the bathroom triggers mold growth inside phone cases or tablet covers. These cases easily trap bacteria and are typically warm due to the heat emitted by the phone's battery. When temperature, humidity, and battery heat combine, it creates an impeccable environment for mold to thrive.'
Moreover, the steam and humidity in the bathroom can gradually seep into the device, degrading the quality of the screen and shortening battery life. Worst of all, it carries the risk of electric shock in wet environments.
The issue is striking not only in terms of hygiene but also psychologically. Behavioural expert Simbarashe Shamu points out that people instantly turn to their screens when they are bored or tired, due to the quick reward and escape mechanism offered by phones.
Reminding us that the bathroom used to be one of the few "natural breaks in the day where phones were absent", Shamu emphasizes that even this small respite has now been invaded by technology.
'The issue isn't solely about screen time. You're transforming the last space that could provide a brief mental respite into yet another source of stimulation and content. These few moments of pause may seem insignificant, but they are crucial for us to realize what our minds truly need.'
Experts assert that it is essential to leave our phones outside the bathroom door, not only to protect ourselves from invisible fecal bacteria and hidden molds, but also to give our minds a chance to rest, even if just a little.
