Why You Should Never Store Potatoes and Onions Together
Known as the inseparable duo of kitchens, potatoes and onions turn into each other's worst enemy when stored together in the same basket. This common mistake, unbeknownst to many, not only burns a hole in your pocket but also poses a threat to your health.
In virtually every household, potatoes and onions are often found stored side by side, either in the same pantry cupboard or in the same basket.
However, experts caution: This 'good neighbor' relationship is actually a destructive operation.
Just because potatoes and onions prefer the same conditions, it doesn't necessarily mean they can coexist peacefully. When these two are placed side by side, they rapidly deplete each other's shelf life:
The Onion's Ethylene Gas Trap: Onions produce a high amount of ethylene gas. This gas causes the neighboring potatoes to ripen prematurely and sprout rapidly, leading to decay.
The Potato's Moisture Strike: On the other hand, potatoes, with their high moisture content, cause the onions to liquefy, soften, and leak. The end result: Both vegetables end up in the trash.
Ethylene Gas: A Plant-Based "Accelerator"
Ethylene is a natural plant hormone that determines the ripening speed of fruits and vegetables. Produce like apples, avocados, and pears release high amounts of ethylene. If you store potatoes near these items, you'll trigger their 'aging' processes.
Here's a Quick Tip: If you want to ripen a firm fruit quickly, put it in a paper bag with an apple; however, if you aim to store them for a longer period, keep them all separate.
Incorrect storage conditions not only lead to waste but also invite the risk of poisoning. Potatoes exposed to sunlight or sudden temperature changes (like being near a stove) start to sprout. This green color is a sign of a poisonous chemical called solanine. Sprouted and green potatoes can potentially become a source of poison.
What is the Correct Formula for Storage?
For Potatoes: Opt for a cool, dark, and well-ventilated place like a pantry or basement. Never store them in the refrigerator if they're uncooked.
For Onions: Choose hanging mesh bags or baskets in a cool but not cold environment with air circulation. Keep them away from the refrigerator unless they're peeled.
