Why You Should Never Store Milk in Fridge Door
One of our most basic habits in the kitchen is on the verge of turning into a significant mistake. The refrigerator door, where most of us place milk cartons for 'easy access' and 'shelf arrangement,' turns out to be the place where milk spoils the fastest. The latest warning from the appliance giant Beko reveals that improper storage conditions are causing us to throw away thousands of lira each year.
Not the Door, but the Middle Shelf: Why Do We Get It Wrong?
Although the door shelf of the refrigerator may appear to be designed to keep bottles and cans upright, scientifically, it's the least suitable place to store milk. The reason is quite straightforward: fluctuations in temperature.
Beko's Head of Product Management, Salah Sun, sums up the situation with these words:
The refrigerator door, being the warmest area inside the appliance due to its frequent opening and closing throughout the day, is not an ideal place for storing milk. Keeping the milk there accelerates bacterial growth, which in turn significantly reduces its shelf life.
The Cost of Disorganization: £1,000 Wasted Annually
Research conducted by the company strikingly reveals the economic impact of food waste. According to data from the UK, due to improper storage and food wastage, an average family of four discards food worth 1,000 pounds (approximately 43,000 TL) per year. A significant portion of this waste is made up of dairy products and fresh foods that spoil before their expiry date.
How to Organize Your Refrigerator? Here are the Golden Rules
Experts recommend the 'right zone' strategy to extend the life of food and protect your budget:
Bottom Shelf (Coldest Zone): This is ideal for raw meat, chicken, and fish. As cold air sinks, this area keeps microbial activity at its lowest level.
Middle Shelves: Dairy products, cheese, yogurt, and ready meals should be stored here. The temperature here is much more stable compared to the door.
Door Compartments: These should only be used for products that can withstand temperature changes (such as ketchup, mayonnaise and other sauces, jams, and beverages like water).
Vegetable Crisper: This is designed to maintain the moisture balance of fruits and vegetables.
