In recent years, the residents of Istanbul, who struggled to breathe due to the combination of excessive humidity and record-breaking temperatures, are experiencing a rather different summer season this year. As the temperatures reach up to 35 degrees, it has frequently prompted the question, 'Why don't we feel the heat as much this year?' AKOM, the local crisis management center, has provided an answer to this intriguing question.

In recent years, the combination of humidity and hot weather made it difficult for Istanbul residents to breathe, however, the summer of 2026 is proving to be cooler. While many people are saying, 'We're not feeling the heat this year,' a response has come from AKOM.
The latest meteorological data and weather forecast reports shared by AKOM have shed light on the fundamental reason behind this situation. According to the statement made by AKOM, the reason why the heat is not felt much this year is the 'northeasterly winds' (poyraz in Turkish). These dominant northerly winds in the region are preventing extreme heat from exerting pressure on Istanbul.
The temperature is being tempered by the influence of the northeasterly wind.
The strong northeasterly winds, reaching speeds of 20 to 50 kilometers per hour intermittently, are directly transporting the relatively cool and refreshing air of the northern regions to the Marmara Region. This natural air flow acts almost like a shield, preventing temperatures from reaching extreme levels. Thanks to the cooling effect brought by the northeasterly winds, the temperatures ranging between 30 and 33 degrees across the metropolis are felt at a much more tolerable level.
