Was There Match-Fixing in the Nobel Peace Prize?
The Norwegian Committee, which determines the Nobel Peace Prize, has launched an investigation over a possible leak suspicion. According to allegations, the winning odds of Machado, who was not among the favorites, increased by about 20 times overnight on a gambling site. When the award was announced and Machado surprisingly achieved victory, attention was drawn to this unusual activity. Moreover, the controversy grew even more when Machado dedicated his award to US President Donald Trump. Norwegian officials are now investigating whether the confidential committee information was leaked.
Interesting fluctuations have been detected in the online betting market.

Less than half an hour into Thursday night, Norwegian time, there was a notable increase in odds targeting Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on an online betting platform. Nobel Institute President Kristian Berg Harpviken said in a statement to Bloomberg, 'It seems we have become the target of a scammer who wants to make money from our confidential information.'
A few hours later, Machado was deemed worthy of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her 'democratic struggle against the authoritarian regime' and became the first Venezuelan to win this award. It was learned that Institute Director Harpviken informed Machado of the result at 10.50 Norwegian time. However, Norwegian newspapers Aftenposten and Finansavisen reported that they detected unusual activity in the betting markets before the announcement.
Some accounts that bet on Machado were opened on the day the prize was to be announced.

Until Thursday, the highest betting odds at a betting company belonged to Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of former Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The site stands out as a platform where bets are concentrated especially on American politics and political events. However, shortly after midnight Norwegian time, the odds of Venezuelan leader Maria Corina Machado soared from 3.75% to 72.8%, indicating a sudden movement in the bets.
Some users won tens of thousands of dollars by betting on Machado. Nobel Committee Chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes stated that the process has been extremely secretive for the last 50 years and emphasized that group members have been successful in keeping secrets. Nobel Institute President Kristian Berg Harpviken, on the other hand, said it was too early to know for sure whether the winner had been leaked.
