Turkey's Most Impressive Canyons

Turkey's Most Impressive Canyons

Turkey's geographical landscape is adorned with magnificent canyons, the product of millions of years of geological processes. From the deep chasms hosting the warm climate of the Mediterranean, to the lush valleys of the Black Sea, the glacier-marked formations of Eastern Anatolia, and the volcanic tuff cliffs of Central Anatolia, each tells a different story. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, there are over 50 significant canyons recorded in our country, many of which are under nature conservation status.

This list brings together the 15 most impressive canyons in Turkey, both in terms of depth and length, as well as geological diversity.

Saklıkent Canyon, located 50 kilometers south of Fethiye, holds the title of being Turkey's largest canyon with its 18-kilometer length and depths reaching 300 meters at certain points. It came into existence through the erosion of karstic limestone formations by Eşen River over approximately 2 million years. The canyon walls are so high that even in the summer months, the interior remains cool and sunlight can only reach the bottom for a few hours during the day. The first 200-300 meters are open to visitors via wooden platforms, yet beyond this point, it becomes a technical area requiring rafting and canyon equipment. Between May and September, the water level is low, making it moderately challenging to visit, but in the spring months, the water flow rate rises to dangerous levels.

Situated just 12 kilometers away from the district of Pınarbaşı in Kastamonu, Valla Canyon holds the title as the second deepest canyon in Turkey with its valley that stretches 12 kilometers in length and plunges between 800 to 1200 meters in depth. Interestingly, most of the perceived depth of the canyon is actually a valley formation; the true canyon section only measures around 100 to 150 meters. Influenced by the Black Sea climate, the canyon remains lush and green throughout every season, blanketed by sycamore, beech, and oak forests. In 2009, the Department of Nature Conservation and National Parks declared it as 'Valla Canyon Nature Park'. The canyon, which can be viewed from observation decks, requires a moderate to high level of fitness for trekking.

Situated in the Taşağıl district of Manavgat, the Tazı Canyon is an impressive natural structure, stretching over 4 kilometers in length and plunging between 200 and 400 meters in depth. It was formed by the carving action of the tributaries of the Manavgat River into the Tortonian limestone (which dates back approximately 7-11 million years). The stalactite and stalagmite formations in the Koçpınar Cave at the canyon's base bear witness to the region's extensive geological history. In 2018, the canyon was granted the status of 'Tazı Canyon Nature Park' by the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks. Thanks to the established walking trails, the park is accessible for visitors of all fitness levels, although descending to the canyon floor requires technical equipment and experience. During the autumn months, when the water level recedes, it becomes a favorite spot for photographers.

Situated between the districts of Gölpazarı and Yenipazar in Bilecik, the canyon is a karstic formation stretching 3 kilometers in length and plunging approximately 200 meters deep. This impressive natural structure was formed over a span of nearly 3 million years, as a result of the erosion of Mesozoic-era limestone. The canyon's most striking feature is its waterfall, which cascades from a height of 5060 meters, and its natural pools. The waters of the Gölpazarı River remain refreshingly cool even in the summer months, enhancing the ecological significance of the area with the endemic fish species that inhabit it. In 2020, the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry declared the region a special conservation area. Its proximity to Istanbul, being only 200 kilometers away, makes it an ideal getaway for weekend escapades. There are trekking trails of moderate difficulty available, but caution is advised due to slippery surfaces.

Nestled in the foothills of the Kaçkar Mountains in the Ardanuç district of Artvin, Cehennem Deresi (Hell's Stream) lives up to its daunting name. Spanning 14 kilometers and boasting an overall altitude difference reaching up to 1000 meters in some areas, this canyon ranks among the most technically challenging and demanding routes in Turkey. It was carved out over 810 million years by the tributaries of the Çoruh River cutting through granite and volcanic rocks dating back to the Jurassic period. Inside the canyon, you can find waterfalls as high as 3040 meters and almost vertical ascents and descents that are remnants of the Ice Age. It is suitable only for experienced teams, with a professional guide and full technical equipment being absolutely necessary. The safest period to visit is between August and September; during other months, the risk of hypothermia is significantly high.
