They Built a 20-Story Wooden Skyscraper With Materials Destined for the Trash
When we think of skyscrapers, we typically envision towering structures made of steel, concrete, and glass. However, a new project called TRÆ is demonstrating that high-rise buildings can be constructed using vastly different materials. The structure, which reaches a height of 78 meters, has been designed using old wind turbine blades, reclaimed aluminum sheets, and repurposed windows.

TRÆ is composed of a 20-story main tower, flanked by two 6-story buildings. The complex houses a variety of spaces, including office areas, co-working sections, and restaurants.
The structure is not entirely made of wood; it employs a hybrid system commonly seen in modern wooden high-rises. Laminated timber columns and cross-laminated timber floors are utilized in the load-bearing system, while concrete cores and steel supports are used at certain points for stability and fire safety.
The waste materials became a part of the building.
One of the most striking aspects of the project is the repurposing of decommissioned wind turbine blades within the structure. Initially, the idea was to use these blades more extensively on the building's exterior, but this plan was altered due to the risk of flammability. Instead, the blades were utilized as sun-shading elements.
The building incorporates not only wind turbine blades but also a myriad of reclaimed materials. Old windows were transformed into glass partitions in the interiors while reclaimed wood and wood scraps were employed for flooring and wall claddings. In certain sections of the facade, aluminum sheets stripped from industrial and farm roofs were put to use.
The TRÆ project stands out for demonstrating that waste materials can be used not just for small decorative details, but also in large-scale structures. According to its architects, the building reduces embodied carbon by 30 to 50 percent compared to a similar concrete high-rise.
