The Restoration of Buckingham Palace Has Been Going On for Years and Still Isn't Finished

Buckingham Palace, standing out as the central residence of the British monarchy, boasts 775 rooms in the district of Westminster, London. These vast quarters are recorded as being comprised of staff bedrooms, bathrooms, offices, and official state rooms. If you also take into account the corridors, storage spaces, and smaller rooms, some sources claim the count can reach up to 1,441.

Here are some lesser-known facts about Buckingham Palace...

The palace was originally constructed as a private residence for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703. In 1761, it was purchased by King George III on behalf of the royal family and was transformed into the private home of Queen Charlotte. At that time, it was still referred to as 'Buckingham House'.

In the 1820s, King George IV commissioned architect John Nash to undertake a radical expansion of the building. Nash completely redesigned the entire structure.

When Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837, the palace officially became the London residence of the monarch. The east front was altered again in 1847, resulting in the symmetrical appearance we see today. Throughout the Victorian era, the palace continued to expand — additional offices, service corridors, and staff rooms were added.

The palace serves a dual purpose, functioning both as a museum and a government building.

The palace serves not only as a residence, but also as a state office. Its 19 state rooms — the Throne Room, Music Room, Blue Room, White Room — are utilized for official receptions and hosting foreign heads of state. These rooms witness grand feasts, award ceremonies, and diplomatic discussions. Approximately 50,000 guests pass through the palace annually, with a majority attending the 'garden parties' held during the summer. The garden, boasting a vast area of 17 hectares, holds the title of the largest private garden in London. Each garden party can accommodate up to 2,500 guests at a time.

A Restoration Worth 369 Million Pounds

The restoration program, which commenced in 2017 and is slated for completion in 2027, carries a total cost of 369 million pounds. The project involves strengthening old electrical installations, pipes, roof insulation, and flooring. Some sections, untouched since the 19th century, still have the original gas lighting infrastructure in place. Naturally, even minor repairs in such a historic building can become complex.

Shall we draw a small comparison?

Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, which served as the residence of Ottoman sultans between 1453 and 1853, spans an area of 700,000 square meters, with four courtyards and over 300 rooms. The interior volume of Buckingham Palace is less than half that of Topkapi, but its functional density is much higher. While the Topkapi complex was designed to expand, Buckingham is stacked in layers on a limited plot. As the British monarchy is still active, the building functions as both a museum and a working state center.
