According to the BBC, our gut bacteria also play a pivotal role in supporting our immune function. It's known that around 70% of our immune system resides in the gut and that the gut microbiome contributes to hormone regulation, inflammation control, and communication between the brain and gut.

Scientist, dietician, and author Megan Rossi, also known as the 'Gut Health Doctor,' explains:

'Just because you're not experiencing gut symptoms doesn't automatically mean your gut health is in good shape. That's because gut health impacts not just digestive symptoms; it also affects mental health, heart health, and many other areas.'

So, are you now interested in taking better care of your gut?

The trend of the 30 plant point system focuses more on diversity rather than quantity. In a nutshell, the goal is to consume 30 different plant-based foods within a week to support gut health.

Here, plants are divided into six categories:

Whole grains (brown rice, oats, barley, and quinoa)

Vegetables

Fruits

Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, and beans)

Nuts and seeds

Herbs and spices

Dr. Shireen Kassam, founder of PlantBased Health Professionals UK, emphasizes that consuming the same plant twice does not earn an extra plant point. However, green and red apples are counted as different points. The reason for this is the variety of chemicals in differently colored plants.

You aim to fill the 30 points within seven days and consume different plants. Most of the plants in the six categories are counted as one point. However, as herbs and spices are consumed in small portions, each is counted as a quarter point.

Heads up: There are also those that are not counted as plant points

Anything not produced from whole foods has zero plant points. Therefore, white bread and pasta are not counted as plant points because they are made from the inner part of the wheat grain from which the fiber-rich bran and germ have been removed. Whole grain bread or pasta, on the other hand, is counted.

Thanks to balanced meals, reaching 30 plant points and maintaining gut health is quite easy.
