Terror at Everest: Fast-Moving Avalanche Buries Climber Camp in White

While mountaineering may seem utterly pointless to some, it's a way of life for its devotees. This passion draws thousands of people to the peaks each year. However, it can also expose them to the relentless face of nature. Influenced by the trends of nature and extreme sports on social media, an increasing number of people are trying to find their place at the foot of colossal mountains like Everest every day. Yet, the high altitude and freezing cold can turn the quest for adventure into a life-or-death struggle at any moment.

Images captured at the Everest Base Camp once again laid bare the fact that nature is no joking matter. Footage showing a massive avalanche breaking off from the enormous slopes in the background and rapidly advancing towards the camp area, even while watching, was enough to make hearts leap into mouths. The calmness of the mountaineers during those moments, meanwhile, garnered admiration.

Is it advisable to wait until reaching the avalanche-prone camping area and then seek shelter in a tent for protection against the avalanche?

In these critical moments at the Everest Base Camp, climbers are making both significant life-saving decisions and panic-induced critical mistakes. One of the most prudent actions taken by climbers is seeking immediate shelter in the nearest tents and securing themselves by closing the tent zippers as soon as they notice an avalanche approaching. Staying out in the open during an avalanche would result in being swept away by the mass, so taking refuge in a tent becomes a vital shield. However, the gravest mistake made is that some individuals still remain outside, attempting to capture the moment with their mobile phones or cameras, becoming paralyzed with fear and delaying their refuge. In the face of such relentless force of nature, every second should be accounted for.

So, what should be done in such a situation?

The actions to be taken when faced with such a massive avalanche disaster are quite clear. As soon as the avalanche is noticed, one should immediately move away from the open area and if available, enter a shelter such as a tent or refuge and assume the fetal position. When the avalanche covers the tent, the most significant life-threatening danger is not the weight on the abdomen, but the respiratory tract filling with snow and ice dust. Therefore, a small air gap should be created in front of the face with hands inside the tent, the infiltration of snow dust into the lungs should be prevented, and calm should be maintained while conserving energy for the arrival of the rescue teams outside.
