Strategic Train Services Resume After 10-Year Hiatus
South Korea is set to revive train services to Dorasan Station, located on the North Korean border and referred to as the 'symbol of hope'. According to a statement made by the Ministry of Unification, the railway tracks stretching from the capital, Seoul, to the northernmost point of the rail network, are about to buzz with activity after a lengthy hiatus.
It Was Once a Gateway to Trade
Dorasan Station held a mission that extended far beyond being a mere stopover. In the past, it was the conduit for the transportation of materials to the Kaesong Industrial Region in North Korea, and for ferrying products manufactured there back to the South.
However, with the escalation of political tension between the two countries, the Kaesong Industrial Region was completely shut down in 2016, bringing commercial shipments to a standstill.
After the cessation of commercial activities, the station had served for a while for touristic purposes.
Yet, the station couldn't seem to shake off its streak of misfortune:
2016: Commercial lines were shut down due to political tensions.
2019: As part of the measures against the Covid19 pandemic, tourist services were entirely halted.
