Traditional tile and concrete roofs are becoming a thing of the past. According to data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 'green roofs' installed on buildings not only reduce the need for air conditioning by up to 75%, but also put an end to the stifling heat waves in cities. Moreover, they result in savings of thousands of dollars on bills.

The most radical solution against the suffocating 'urban heat island' effect, caused by the concrete surfaces of buildings in cities, has come from nature itself. Experts are indicating the dawn of an era of 'green roofs' (roof gardens), consisting of living vegetation, as opposed to traditional tile roofs.

Current reports published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have substantiated that this new generation roof system transforms buildings into a giant refrigerator in the summer, and into a sheltered insulation shield in the winter.

Green roofs, by utilizing the shading and evaporation properties of the plants they encompass, serve to cool not only the interior of the building but also the surrounding air.

Scientific data summarizes the miraculous effects of this system as follows:

A Cooler Surface by 56°F (Approximately 31°C): The surface temperature of green roofs remains a full 56°F lower compared to traditional black or tile roofs.

Drop in Air Temperature: It allows cities to breathe by cooling the ambient air near the roof by up to 20°F (approximately 11°C).

Natural Air Conditioning Indoors: It reduces the indoor temperature of buildings by 27°F (approximately 15°C), leading to a massive energy saving by reducing the need for air conditioning by up to 75%.

Although many building owners are initially hesitant about green roofs due to the cost of installation, life cycle analyses spanning 50 years completely shatter this perception.

Green roofs do more than just reduce energy bills; they offer a significantly longer lifespan compared to traditional roofs. When viewed on a per square meter basis, they provide building occupants with direct cash savings of $0.15-0.57 per year for cooling and $0.18 per year for heating. This translates to thousands of dollars in savings in the long run.

While 'cool roofs' that simply reflect sunlight may be an alternative for those on a tight budget, the additional benefits offered by green roofs clearly set them apart:

Reducing Air Pollution and Ozone: A case study conducted in Kansas City alone found that green roofs absorbed 269 tons of carbon dioxide annually, preventing tens of thousands of dollars in health expenditures.

Boosting Mental Health: These roofs, which provide a connection to nature amidst concrete jungles, lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and enhance mental productivity in individuals.
