Senegal Dust Hits Turkiye: Experts Issue Warning for Mud Rain During the Weekend
Turkey has recently been under the influence of consecutive 'yellow code' heavy rainfall warnings issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology and the Ministry of Interior. To add to these warnings, desert dust has also come into play. While it has been indicated that the temperatures will drop below seasonal norms over the weekend, this dust mass coming from Africa will combine with the downpours, manifesting itself as 'mud rain' in many cities.
Following the issuance of 'yellow code' warnings to 39 cities, they were further hit with an additional alert for 'mud rain'.
The General Directorate of Meteorology had issued a yellow-coded warning for a total of 39 provinces, primarily in the Black Sea, Central Anatolia, Aegean, and Mediterranean regions. The Meteorology Department cautioned citizens about the risk of sudden floods, waterlogging, hail, and lightning. However, as we approached the weekend, dust clouds originating from Senegal were added to the forecast. According to the latest updates from the Weather Forum, this dust transport from Senegal has entered Turkey's atmosphere and is expected to settle on the ground with the rainfall.
Mud can accumulate on vehicles and windows.
Authorities and experts are advising car owners to refrain from leaving their vehicles in open areas until the risk of mud rain has passed, recommending the use of covered parking lots where possible. It's crucial to not neglect the cleaning process to prevent the layer of mud accumulated on the vehicle's surface after rainfall from drying and damaging the paint. Moreover, as the anticipation of strong winds and storms continues, it's vitally important to take precautions against objects that could potentially be airborne, such as outdoor pots and signs.
