The thrill of the World Cup is sweeping across the globe. Matches are being closely monitored, with fans pouring their hearts into supporting the teams representing their nations. Naturally, speculation is rife about who will clinch the title this year. Some are betting on France, others are rooting for England.

However, science has a different prediction.

After conducting a thorough analysis, statisticians have put forth the claim that Spain will emerge as the champions this year.

Our National Football Team, after a full 24 years, had once again earned the right to participate in the World Cup, filling us all with pride. However, the initial matches did not unfold as we had hoped. In their second match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group D, the National Team faced off against Paraguay. Unfortunately, our team suffered a 1-0 defeat due to a goal conceded in the first half.

Following this outcome, our team, also known as the Crescent-Stars, experienced their second defeat and were subsequently eliminated from the World Cup. While we were overjoyed to have made it to the World Cup after so many years, we were left disappointed as we did not see a single goal from Turkey in this grand tournament.

Although the World Cup journey has come to an end for us, the excitement is still in full swing for other countries. From Mexico to England, Ghana to Japan, a total of 48 different countries are caught up in the World Cup frenzy. Fans are eagerly following the matches, cheering on their teams, and of course, making the inevitable predictions.

Opinions vary on which country will emerge victorious in the World Cup. Some are backing France, boasting Mbappe in their lineup this year, while others are supporting Argentina, the champions of the previous tournament.

Science has put the final nail in the coffin of the debate over who will emerge victorious in the World Cup.

As reported by BBC, a team of European statisticians claim to have developed a machine learning algorithm capable of predicting the winner of the FIFA World Cup. After analyzing a variety of data on national teams and players, the model ran over 100,000 simulations to identify the most likely victor.

Dr. Achim Zeileis, the lead author of the team from the University of Innsbruck, revealed that, according to this methodology, Spain emerges as the most probable winner of this year's tournament.

The comprehensive data analyzed suggests that Spain is poised to become this year's champion. England, on the other hand, is predicted to be the runner-up.

The predictions made previously using this method had proven to be accurate.

A research group consisting of scholars from TU Dortmund and TU Munich in Germany, Molde University in Norway, and Innsbruck University in Austria had previously made predictions using the same method. In 2018, the team accurately predicted that the USA would be the victors of the 2019 Women's World Cup. However, their prediction for the 2023 Women's World Cup did not hit the mark.

The algorithm predicting this year's World Cup processed available data from all national matches over the past eight years. This data was then combined with an estimation of each team's 'probable' strength. The overall strength of each team was adjusted according to the score of each player, which was derived from data related to the players' performances at both club and national team levels, and their expected values in the international transfer market.

Zeileis is confident that the model's prediction about this year's champion is spot on. However, he emphasizes that it's merely a prediction and should be open to statistical shocks, such as Cape Verde's goalless draw with Spain.

'All our predictions are probabilistic, clearly below 100%, and therefore in no way absolute. Even though we can measure this uncertainty in terms of probabilities from the multiverse of possible tournaments, it is far from predetermined which of these possible tournaments we will witness during the actual competition.'

Will the method that science has been using for years prove its worth this time around? Or will Cape Verde, participating in the World Cup for the first time in its history and continuing to make history, keep surprising us?
