Remote Stone House Built Between Four Boulders Gets 400kg Door to Keep Tourists out
Nestled between four colossal boulders in the Fafe Mountains of Portugal, the 'Casa do Penedo' (Stone House) has been defying nature for half a century. This unconventional structure, devoid of electricity and running water, has essentially been transformed into a fortress due to the persistent intrusions of thieves and curious tourists.
Everything began in the early 1970s, when an engineer from Guimarães started to envision a weekend retreat, a sanctuary away from the city, where he could unwind with his family.
An engineer set his sights on a unique construction project in the Fafe Mountains near Cabeceiras de Basto. He decided to build a house by bridging the gap between four large rocks that had caught his eye.
Following a grueling construction process that lasted over two years and involved heavy machinery, Casa do Penedo was finally completed in the late 1974. However, there was one thing the visionary engineer hadn't taken into account: the house he built seeking tranquility would become one of the world's most intriguing structures.
In the house officially recorded as a "mountain refuge", there's not a single thing that's symmetrical.
The building, which harmonizes with the nature's own structure, boasts a quirky design, from its roof and windows to its rooms and even floors.
In this entirely off-grid home, traces of modern life are almost non-existent:
No Electricity or Running Water: The house is still illuminated by candles.
Heating: The rustic stone fireplace in the interior keeps the house warm.
Natural Pool: Outside the house, there lies an open swimming pool, also carved into the rocks.
The 770-Pound Couch: Inside the house, wood has been the material of choice for everything from stairs to furniture. However, the kitchen and living room boast a unique couch, weighing in at a hefty 770 pounds, made from concrete and eucalyptus wood. The beds, too, are custom-made to fit the unusual style of the house.
What started as the house gaining viral fame on the internet turned into a nightmare for the family seeking a peaceful life.
The house, which became a target for curious tourists, thieves, and vandals, had its windows broken more than 20 times. Consequently, the owners had no choice but to take drastic measures. Today, the windows of the house are bolstered by iron bars and made from bulletproof glass.
To deter potential thieves, the entrance door was constructed from reinforced steel, weighing in at a hefty 400 kilograms.
Due to the overwhelming influx of tourists and ensuing security issues, homeowners ultimately had no choice but to concede and relocate. Today, Casa do Penedo is no longer a family residence; instead, it serves as a small museum where antique furniture, photographs documenting the building's history, and memorabilia are on display for visitors.
