Not Red Meat or Salt: Cardiologist Reveals the Hidden Drink That Clogs Arteries
When it comes to preserving heart and vascular health, the first things that come to mind are usually avoiding red meat, reducing salt, and steering clear of processed foods. However, experts emphasize that the beverages we consume throughout the day play just as vital a role in vascular health as the meals on our plate.
Dr. Sirisha Vadali, a Non-Invasive Cardiology Specialist from the United States, issued critical warnings about the potential for sugary tea (cold/ready-made sugary teas), which is frequently consumed to cool down or enjoy during the summer months and in daily life, to silently cause plaque buildup and blockages in the arteries.
Atherosclerosis, a condition characterized by the hardening and narrowing of arteries, is a leading cause of death in developed countries and globally. Alarmingly, it can progress over many years without showing any symptoms.
Plaques that accumulate on the walls of blood vessels over time pave the way for fatal conditions such as heart attacks and strokes by obstructing blood flow. Dr. Vadali points out that many people view high salt and cholesterol as the main culprits of vascular blockage, but excessive consumption of added sugar also creates a destruction on the vascular structure that is just as devastating as salt. It's emphasized that sweet teas and flavored iced tea drinks contain as much processed added sugar as carbonated beverages.
Recent research on metabolism and evaluations by cardiologists indicate that regularly consuming high-sugar beverages triggers a chain reaction in the body.
Excessive added sugar leads to rapid weight gain, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, skyrocketing levels of triglycerides in the blood, and chronic inflammation in the blood vessel walls.
When all these negative factors come together, the endothelial tissue that provides the flexibility of the veins suffers damage, and plaque accumulation becomes inevitable. Dr. Vadali emphasizes that not only sugary teas, but also energy drinks, flavored instant coffees, and fruit juices with additives are hidden 'sugar bombs.'
Experts, who point out that small but sustainable changes in lifestyle are needed to protect vascular health and minimize existing risk, recommend opting for completely sugar-free brewed hot or cold teas instead of sugary ones. While it is stressed that plain water should always be the primary source of hydration, it is also stated that the labels of electrolyte and sports drinks consumed after sports or intense sweating should definitely be checked. Regular walking and resistance exercises, along with avoiding processed foods and turning to sugar-free beverages, are said to maintain vascular flexibility in the long run and significantly reduce the risk of heart attack.
