From the puzzling minds of the creators of Dark, a German science fiction thriller, sprouts another mystery series, 1899 that encompasses historical drama and horror.

1899 is an old science fiction European tale, clearly evinced by its several languages spoken, including English, Danish, Polish, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese. It's truly a film montage of European descent.

What’s the Story for ‘1899’?

1899 showcases immigrants from different European countries voyaging from Europe to New York in a titanic-like ship in the quest for better lives. 

Set in 1899, just at the onset of the 20th century, the immigrants are hopeful of finding new opportunities in great America when they meet another migrant ship in the waters. The journey escalates into a terrifying nightmare as staggering events unfold.

Netflix unveiled the series' official trailer a day ago after dropping the teaser clip four months prior. 

The 2-minute clip hints at the conundrum among the onboard immigrants as their ship's encounter with Prometheus unleashes a series of bewildering and unexplainable episodes, affecting each passenger, including the captain.

Who Created ‘1899’?

Production for 1899 began in 2018 when Netflix signed a contract with German directors Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. The deal first led to the fruition of the sci-fi thriller series Dark, which had a three-year run from 2017 to 2020.

1899 is produced by Dark Ways, Friese and Odar’s company based in Berlin, Germany.

When Will ‘1899’ Debut?

1899 will release its first episode, titled 'The Ship', on November 17, 2022, on Netflix. The series consists of eight episodes, with each running for an hour.
