We resort to various ways to have fun not only at sea but also on the beach. Playing with sand, building castles, or digging water channels are beach activities that almost everyone has enjoyed since childhood. However, when we fail to foresee the consequences of our actions, we inadvertently invite disaster.

A group of young people seeking fun on the beach dug a gigantic hole that exceeded human height. The water channel they opened from the top of the beach towards the sea filled up with a massive volume of water as the waves rose. The youngsters, who were sitting in the hole for fun and waiting for the waves to fill it, were trapped within seconds due to the sudden shift of the sand and the vacuum effect created by the water. The moments when they were rescued by the intervention of bystanders and lifeguards were captured moment by moment by those on the beach.

By its nature, sand loses its ability to hold together completely when it dries or becomes saturated with excessive water. When you dig a hole nearly as deep as a person's height, the walls of the hole can suddenly collapse without any warning. The weight of a cubic meter of sand is approximately 1.5 tons; this is equivalent to having the weight of a car, not just a thin layer of soil, pressing down on you. Moreover, the chest cavity of a person trapped in the sand cannot expand to breathe due to the intense pressure created by the sand, leading to suffocation within minutes. Although the images of water brought by the waves filling the hole might initially seem to create a fun pool environment, the sand mixed with water becomes even heavier, completely limiting the movement of those inside the hole. If you don't want an innocent day at the beach to end up in the hospital, you should think twice before interfering with the natural structure of the shoreline.
