The 'dragon heat' phenomenon, which rapidly swept across the European continent and is classified among extreme weather events, has now set its sights on Turkey. Cengiz Çelik, a Weather Forecast Specialist at the Turkish State Meteorological Service (TSMS), announced that a stifling heatwave will be prevalent across the country, particularly affecting the southern and western regions. While sharing the latest weather forecasts on TGRT News, Çelik issued critical warnings for the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Southeastern Anatolia regions.

According to data shared by meteorology expert Cengiz Çelik, the rise in temperatures will gradually make its presence felt. Starting from the weekend, thermometers, particularly in the southern parts of Turkey, will exceed the seasonal norms. From the first day of the new week, they will start to climb in all western, inland and southern regions. Çelik, who pointed out that air temperatures could reach even more extreme levels in July and August, emphasized that citizens need to take extra precautions against the stifling heat, especially during midday hours when the sun's rays hit the earth at a perpendicular angle.

Critical alert issued for three regions.

The areas where the heatwave is expected to be most intense include the Aegean and Mediterranean coastal strip and the Southeastern Anatolia Region. Over the weekend, temperatures in the shade in these regions are predicted to hover around 35 to 40 degrees Celsius. However, the situation on the Mediterranean coasts will escalate to much more serious levels due to high humidity. In contrast, in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, despite the low humidity, the bare temperature is forecasted to rise directly above 40 degrees Celsius. Experts are advising residents in these regions to avoid going outside during the hottest hours of the day.

The perceived temperature will soar to 50 degrees.

The most striking detail in the weather forecast report was the radical effect of humidity on perceived temperatures. Even if thermometers on the Mediterranean coasts show 34-36 degrees under normal conditions, it was emphasized that due to high relative humidity, the perceived temperature could approach 40-45 degrees, and in some places, even up to 50 degrees.

The situation in big cities is not much different. Although it is predicted that temperatures in Istanbul will remain at 30-31 degrees, the high humidity layer throughout the metropolis will make the air feel much more oppressive and stifling. Similarly, tourist cities like Adana will see temperatures of 37 degrees, while in Kahramanmaras and Sanliurfa, temperatures will range from 38 to 40 degrees. Especially in Antalya, Mersin, and Adana, due to the high humidity barrier, it is recommended that residents prefer cooler areas unless in emergencies.
