Innovative 7,000 Square Meter Sports Center Built in the Shape of a Badminton Shuttlecock
In recent years, India has made waves with its massive investments in sports, particularly badminton. This time, however, it has embarked on an architectural project that pushes the boundaries. The new sports center rising in the city of Bhubaneswar in the state of Odisha has set a world first with its unconventional design. Breaking away from traditional box-shaped sports hall designs, the architects constructed the building in the direct shape of a badminton shuttlecock.
The project, developed in line with the local government's vision by the renowned Indian architecture firm Archohm, reflects the anatomy of a badminton shuttlecock in its building design to the letter.
The curved base of the building, resembling a bowl, alludes to the weighted center of a badminton shuttlecock, typically made from cork or polyurethane.
When the circular and vertical lighting systems kick in at night, they endow the top of the building with the silhouette of a goose feather when viewed from afar.
The city of Bhubaneswar is notoriously known for its frequent encounters with severe storms.
Architects have successfully harnessed the spherical geometry of a badminton shuttlecock to evenly distribute wind pressure across the building surface. Unlike rectangular structures, this curved edifice slides the wind over itself, providing maximum structural safety in extreme weather conditions.
'A badminton shuttlecock is an object affected by wind; however, this building, modeled after its shape, employs physics to conquer the wind.'
By its very nature, the sport of badminton is exceedingly sensitive to external factors.
Even the slightest breeze can alter the trajectory of the ball. To tackle this issue, 'The Shuttle' has been equipped with top-tier technology:
The main hall has been enveloped with a sealant that completely isolates it from the outside world. The mechanical ventilation system distributes the air meticulously, ensuring there is no direct cross-airflow over the courts.
Furthermore, a homogeneous light distribution has been ensured on the courts to prevent reflections, shadows, and excessive contrasts that could impair the players' vision. By strategically placing the fixtures, the occurrence of visual impairment during the game has been effectively circumvented.
Designed as a colossal ecosystem that nurtures athletes, not just a mere hall, this center spans a massive construction area of approximately 7,000 square meters.
The complex includes the following:
Eight professional badminton courts of international standards, along with integrated stands,
A fully equipped fitness and athletic performance center,
Dormitories for future champions, a library, and study areas,
Social spaces, a coffee shop, a sports store, and a terrace with panoramic city views, accessible for people with disabilities.
With this symbolic building, the state of Odisha aims to transform the region into a hub for the global badminton scene and host international tournaments.
