Indian Man Shocked as River He Cleaned for 8 Months Is Polluted Again
Pollution has been a persistent problem in India for years. Rivers there are more than just sources of water; they lie at the heart of daily life and religious faith. People pray along their banks and place flowers and offerings in the water, yet many of these rivers are struggling to stay clean as waste continues to pile up.
Bittu, a young man who spent eight months cleaning a river on his own, said he was shocked to see it polluted again just a month later. The footage showed a crowd gathered along the riverbank, as well as waste collecting on the water’s surface. The sight angered viewers just as much as it did Bittu.

The young person who set out to clean up the river carried on the fight alone.
Bittu Tabahi, who lives in the town of Biaora in India’s Madhya Pradesh state, set out with friends on January 26 to clean up the Ajnar River. After a while, his friends stopped working, but the young man carried on alone. For days, he waded into the water and picked up plastic bottles, bags and other rubbish by hand. He also paid for supplies such as gloves and garbage bags out of his own pocket.
During the cleanup, he developed infections in his limbs and came across dangerous animals. After footage of his efforts went viral on social media, the Biaora municipal council joined in, using heavy machinery to clear the accumulated waste. The council also proposed a wastewater treatment plant costing around 147.7 million rupees to treat sewage flowing into the river through five major drains. No matter how much effort one person puts in, keeping an area clean takes a shared commitment from everyone.
