An attention-grabbing agricultural project is being implemented in the Soma district of Manisa. The approximately 90-degree hot water released from the thermal power plant will be used outside of energy production this time. Tomatoes will be grown in the greenhouse to be established with soilless agriculture. The project will set a precedent in Turkey.

First Tomatoes to be Grown in a 10-Acre Greenhouse

In the first phase of the project, it is planned to establish a greenhouse of approximately 10 acres. Cluster tomatoes will be produced first in the greenhouse. In the future, it is aimed to grow different products such as strawberries and capia peppers.

The notable aspect of the system is the utilization of the existing heat from the power plant to heat the greenhouse. Thus, it is aimed to reduce one of the most significant expenses of greenhouse farming, especially in winter months, which is the heating cost.

The Coordination of the Project is Undertaken by the University

The coordination of the study is carried out by Sivas Cumhuriyet University. The coordination of the project is undertaken by Volkan Yörük, a lecturer in the Plant and Animal Production Department of the Vocational School of Technical Sciences at the university.

According to the information provided by Yörük, the current capacity of the power plant has a production potential far beyond the first greenhouse to be established.

It is stated that the hot water capacity of the power plant is sufficient to meet the energy needs of a greenhouse area of approximately 500 to 800 acres.

Therefore, the first phase of 10 acres is considered as the beginning of a larger project. If the application is successful, it is planned to expand the greenhouse area and implement the system in different thermal power plants.

Waste Heat Will Be Converted to Agricultural Production

The main goal of the project is to reevaluate the heat generated during energy production. By using this source in greenhouse heating, it is aimed to reduce energy consumption and lower production costs.

If the application to be started in Soma is successful, it may be possible to use the heat in agricultural production in regions where similar thermal power plants are located.
