He Moved a Passenger Plane Into the Forest and Turned It Into a Home!

Nestled in the woods of Hillsboro, a city in the state of Oregon, USA, stands an old Boeing 727. At first glance, it may appear to be an abandoned aircraft. However, for 74-year-old Bruce Campbell, it has been home for many years. Campbell, a retired electrical engineer, purchased the decommissioned Boeing 727 for $100,000 back in 1999. Initially, the plane was transported from Greece to Hillsboro Airport, after which its wings and tail were temporarily removed to facilitate its relocation to the wooded area.

Today, the approximately 1,065 square feet passenger plane serves as Campbell's living space. Inside, it houses a shower, a makeshift sink, a futon bed, a portable washing machine, and a refrigerator. He uses a food service cart, salvaged from another aircraft, as a pantry. Rather than transforming the plane into a conventional, luxurious home, Campbell's objective is to breathe a second life into it. In his view, retired planes can be repurposed into long-lasting and durable structures, instead of being scrapped.

Over time, Campbell's airplane home has evolved beyond merely being his place of residence. It has transformed into a fascinating stopover for curious visitors from all over the world. When Campbell is at home, he offers tours of the plane. Visitors enter through the old emergency exit, explore the cockpit, and get a firsthand view of how a passenger plane has been converted into a home. Small events and concerts are also organized during the summer months.

The history of the airplane is as intriguing as its current state. According to reports, this Boeing 727 once belonged to Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and was used in 1975 to transport Onassis's remains for his funeral.

So, Bruce Campbell's forest home is not just an unconventional living space, but also a genuine airplane with a rich history. Campbell hopes to inspire others to view retired airplanes through a different lens and transform them into new living spaces.
