An innovative project that breaks the mold in waste management has been launched in Wales. Disposable diapers, which are discarded by the millions each year and take up to 500 years to decompose in nature, are now being used as raw materials in road construction, thanks to a specially developed technology.

Upon witnessing trucks unloading tons of diapers daily, landfill manager Rob Poyer began to explore whether there might be a way to repurpose this waste.

Disposable diapers, comprised of a blend of plastic, fiber, and super absorbent polymers, are among the most challenging waste products to recycle. In Wales alone, approximately 140 million diapers end up in the trash each year, producing toxic emissions when incinerated. Determined to put an end to this environmental nightmare, Poyer, after more than a decade of research, established the NappiCycle company and discovered a new use for tons of diapers: roads.

Diapers from nurseries, hospitals, and homes are being separated in special containers to prevent them from mixing with regular trash.

These diapers are then transported to the factory where they undergo a rigorous sterilization process. This step effectively eliminates all unpleasant odors.

Once the materials have been separated, the plastic and polymer parts are chosen, broken down, and transformed into small pellets.

The resulting material is then weighed in predetermined amounts, ready to be mixed with asphalt.

107,000 Diapers Saved from Landfill: In the pilot implementation, the 4.3 tons of fiber reclaimed from diapers were used to resurface a 2.3-kilometer road.

46,000 Diapers per Kilometer: This ratio signifies the prevention of approximately 46,000 diapers from harming the environment for each kilometer of the paved road.

Reduction in Carbon Footprint: By replacing traditional asphalt raw materials with recycled components, the processing of resources with a high environmental impact is prevented.

Engineering Advantage: Tests conducted have demonstrated that this new material, supplemented with diaper content, can offer twice the durability compared to traditional asphalt. This not only extends the lifespan of highways but also reduces the need for maintenance, resulting in direct savings for the public budget. Moreover, drivers using these roads reported no noticeable difference in their driving comfort.

In 2020, NappiCycle teamed up with a sustainable children's products brand, paving the way for the project to be tested and expanded across the United Kingdom.

The Welsh government's solid waste targets, which promote a circular economy, have provided an ideal laboratory setting for this pioneering initiative.

The company, which has recycled half a million baby diapers to date, has also been awarded local innovation and sustainability prizes.

Taking the technology beyond Wales requires the establishment of large-scale collection infrastructures and adaptation to different waste systems. The raw material is plentiful: In the United Kingdom alone, 3 billion baby diapers are thrown away each year. Implementing this model on a global scale signifies the construction of thousands of kilometers of sustainable roads.
