Found on the Sidewalk and Taken Home: Object Turns Out to Be Worth a Fortune
A baffling incident occurred in Spain that left people astounded. A tourist visiting the city of Seville for a holiday, casually picked up a painting abandoned on the sidewalk, taking it home simply because he 'liked the frame'. However, what the man dismissed as a mere piece of decoration turned out to be a priceless masterpiece, sought after by the police all over.
The incident took place in the city of Seville, Spain.
Living in the city of Murcia, 57-year-old Andrés Hurtado stumbled upon an unattended painting on the sidewalk during a sightseeing trip in the streets of Sevilla. Not out of artistic curiosity, but purely by chance, Hurtado approached the painting after witnessing a group of young people leave it behind in the scorching city heat.
In a subsequent interview with local media, Hurtado recounted the incident with these words:
'I saw a painting left on the street and thought to myself, 'What a cool frame.' To be honest, I didn't even look at the picture inside. I just took it because I liked the frame and brought it back to my hotel room.'
Unbeknownst to Hurtado, who had casually tossed the painting into a cheap shopping bag, it was an original masterpiece by Joaquín Sorolla, one of Spain's most renowned painters.
After returning home, Hurtado, intrigued by the mystery behind the painting, took advantage of modern technology and presented photos of the canvas to an Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Initially skeptical due to the thousands of counterfeit and imitation works on the market, the man was taken aback by the artificial intelligence's response, 'This piece could be an original Sorolla.' Overwhelmed with excitement, he immediately contacted an auction house. Upon recognizing the authenticity of the artwork, the experts promptly offered Hurtado thousands of euros (millions of lira).
However, the other side of the coin soon revealed itself. The painting hadn't been found on the street; it had been forgotten. The true owners of the piece had inadvertently left the million-dollar painting on a Seville sidewalk during a last-minute frenzy of loading their car to move to their beach house. As soon as they realized their mistake, they reported it as 'lost/stolen' to the police.
Upon learning that the painting was being frantically sought by its owners, the tourist, setting aside the million-dollar offers from the auction house, promptly got in touch with the police.
Asserting that this was not a theft, but merely an unfortunate find, Hurtado handed the painting over to the police.
Having spoken with the owner of the painting over the phone, Hurtado confirmed that the family had made this mistake in their rush to hit the beach. The family, having averted a major disaster and reunited with their priceless artwork, promised Hurtado a special 'gift and reward' in recognition of his honesty.
