Red is considered a symbol of good luck, so long strings of red firecrackers laid out along the streets are among the most spectacular expressions of this custom.

At a festival in China, firecrackers laid across a street were set off one after another. As colorful smoke billowed between the buildings, people nearby could be seen running for cover. The smoke soon engulfed the entire street, transforming the scene into something resembling a battlefield.
