Democrats 66 (D66) Win the Dutch Elections
The Netherlands went to the polls yesterday. According to unofficial election results, the social liberal Democrats 66 (D66), led by Rob Jetten, emerged as the victors of the election by securing 27 parliamentary seats. On the other hand, the far-right Freedom Party (PVV), known for its anti-Islam and xenophobic stance under the leadership of Geert Wilders, suffered the biggest loss in the election, losing 12 seats. Despite this, the PVV, which won 25 seats, is expected to be influential in the upcoming coalition talks. The People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), led by Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, secured 23 seats, placing them third in the election.
After what is anticipated to be lengthy coalition talks, Rob Jetten, the openly gay leader of D66, could potentially make history by becoming the first gay Prime Minister of the Netherlands.
In the general elections held in the Netherlands, while the racist Geert Wilders experienced a loss of power, it became evident that the shift towards the far right continued unabated.

According to preliminary results, the social liberal Democrats 66 (D66), led by Rob Jetten, emerged victorious in the elections, surpassing expectations by securing 27 parliamentary seats. Jetten managed to more than double his party's previous tally of 9 seats from the 2023 elections.
Trailing behind D66 was the far-right Freedom Party (PVV), led by Geert Wilders, known for its anti-Islam and anti-immigrant stance. The PVV lost 12 seats compared to the previous election, securing 25 seats this time around.
The People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), a coalition partner in the previous government under the leadership of Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, came in third with 23 seats.
In a country where no single party has managed to secure a majority sufficient to form a government on its own, a coalition of at least three parties is anticipated. To form a government, a party needs the support of at least 76 out of the 150 members of parliament.
Rob Jetten could potentially become the country's first openly gay prime minister.

Should a coalition be formed from left and central parties, Rob Jetten, the 38-year-old leader of D66, could potentially make history as the first openly gay Prime Minister of the Netherlands.
Jetten, who is married to an Argentine hockey player, leads the D66 party which emerged victorious in the elections. Notably, the party advocates for sanctions against Israel.
