After a busy day in the kitchen, it has become a habit in many homes to fill the dishwasher and set it running with a single button press each evening. However, even though these machines are designed to withstand frequent use, home appliance and energy experts beg to differ: Running the dishwasher daily not only shortens its lifespan but also harms the household budget.
Here are four fundamental reasons, according to experts, why you should space out your dishwashing cycles and not run it every day...
1. Rapid wear and tear on parts
Just like the sole of a frequently used running shoe wears down over time, the internal components of a dishwasher also deteriorate with each wash.
Dishwashing expert Mark McCann points out that moving parts such as pumps, filters, and seals tend to break down more quickly as their frequency of use increases.
Daily washes significantly reduce the overall lifespan of the machine. Therefore, it's crucial to use the machine intermittently for its smooth operation.
2. The escalating electricity and water bills
Those who wish to keep their bill amounts under control need to reconsider the frequency of their machine usage. Home renovation expert Douglas Conner emphasizes that daily washing can result in significant costs when projected over a year.
While new generation machines consume approximately 11 liters (3 gallons) of water per cycle, this amount can reach up to 56 liters (15 gallons) per wash in older models. Continuous usage multiplies this expenditure.
3. Wastage of resources due to half-filled loads and insufficient cleaning
If you don't have a large family, getting the dishwasher fully loaded every night can be quite a challenge.
Running the machine without it being fully loaded not only leads to wastage of water and electricity, but it can also result in dishes and glasses being left with remnants of detergent or food particles.
Experts recommend waiting until the dishwasher is completely full before running it; if frequent operation is necessary, it's advised to opt for 'eco' or 'half load / light' washing modes.
4. The escalating need for maintenance and the risk of blockage
Running the dishwasher every day necessitates regular maintenance, much like air conditioners.
As a result of frequent use, food residues accumulate in the filters, causing unpleasant odors, and the spray arms and drain pipes can become clogged.
The more frequently you operate the machine, the more time you need to invest in cleaning the filters and removing lime deposits.
