Couple Transforms Abandoned Public Toilet Into Stunning Million Dollar Dream House
Those passing through the charming coastal town of Barmouth in western Wales nowadays come across a delightful single-room seaside cottage overlooking the Irish Sea. Yet, behind this luxurious structure lies an extraordinary past that leaves many astounded: this address was once an abandoned, dilapidated, and foul-smelling public toilet that had been left untouched for nearly two decades.
Elaine and Alan Taylor, a couple who saw great potential in this neglected building that everyone else turned their noses up at, managed to transform the old toilet block into a dreamy seaside home worth £295,000 (approximately 12.5 million Turkish Lira), following a challenging renovation process that spanned a full decade.
The story began when the Taylor couple, while vacationing in Barmouth, spotted a "For Sale" sign hanging just a few meters away from the beach on Marine Parade Street.
The property was being sold through a 'blind auction,' where potential buyers were not allowed to inspect the interior.
Taking a substantial risk, the couple placed a bid of 33,000 pounds in July 2015 and won the auction. Elaine Taylor recalls the moment, saying, 'We weren't allowed to go inside, it was a completely blind bid. We gambled on the assumption that there was plumbing and electrical wiring, simply because there was a public restroom.'
According to the records of Gwynedd Council, the public restrooms in question were shut down in 1997 and had been left to their fate for 19 long years.
The first challenges awaiting the couple in this seaside building were the dampness, mold, rust, and heavy odors that had accumulated over nearly two decades.
With the housing permit issued at the end of 2016, work officially commenced in the summer of 2017. What appeared on paper to be a simple conversion project, transformed into a decade-long process of rebuilding from scratch due to the difficulties presented by the old structure and construction regulations.
Striking Features of the Luxury Beach House:
The old bathroom urinals and walls have been replaced by a modern, spacious living area where the living room and kitchen merge.
A luxurious skylight was added to the bedroom, allowing the couple to gaze at the sky and stars from their bed at night.
A large corner window with a granite sill brings in a picturesque view of Barmouth beach and the Irish Sea, located just across the street.
Following the completion of the project, the property was listed on the real estate market for a price exceeding £295,000. While it may seem like a tremendous profit to buy at first glance for £33,000 and sell for nearly £300,000, the other side of the coin tells a different story.
The couple estimates that they have shelled out approximately 260,000 pounds for construction and material quality over a span of 10 years.
When the total cost reached 293,000 pounds, it became apparent that this project did not yield a significant profit, but rather broke even. However, for the Taylor couple, this is not a cause for regret. Rather than viewing this process as a profit-focused venture, the couple, who didn't want to leave their home vacant due to Elaine's work routine shifting outside of Wales, consider it an unforgettable experience and a visionary project that adds meaning to their lives.
