Consumers Start Silent Boycott: Giant US Restaurant Chains Blacklisted Over Poor Service
Giant restaurant chains, serving millions of people globally, are recently experiencing a significant prestige loss in customer satisfaction. Skyrocketing prices, shrinking portions, and plummeting service quality have even pushed loyal customers to the brink of rebellion. Thousands of users, united on social media, have prepared an extensive 'avoid' list consisting of brands that fail to meet expectations and do not provide 'value for money,' calling for a boycott.
Citizens in the US have initiated a battle against major restaurant chains. Satisfaction surveys have seen a snowballing increase.
The results of the 2025 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), a US-based study that sheds light on global consumer trends, laid bare the peril within the fast-service industry. The average customer satisfaction across the industry was determined to be 79 out of 100, with many giant chains frequently associated with complaints falling far below this threshold.
In the full-service restaurant category, Denny's took the hardest hit. The chain anchored itself at the bottom of the list by receiving the lowest satisfaction score in its category.
The prices remained the same, yet the portions have shrunk.
At the top of the list of issues that consumers are most vocal about is the tactic known as 'shrinkflation' in economic literature - a strategy of reducing portion sizes while keeping the price the same or even increasing it.
Complaints about noticeable reductions in the portions of burritos and bowls at Chipotle have snowballed on social media. Users are disgruntled about finding significantly less food on their plates despite paying hefty prices.
Despite their high pricing policies, both Five Guys, with its claim of premium burgers, and pasta chain Noodles & Company, have failed to live up to expectations with their performance.
Chronic technical glitches in the Sonic DriveIn mobile app, coupled with some of the products served at the table being undercooked, have escalated criticisms towards the brand.
Those who say "it's not worth the price" are switching restaurants.
It's not just fast food chains that are feeling the backlash, but even restaurants considered more prestigious for dinner service are also getting a taste of this reaction. Renowned restaurant chains like Olive Garden and The Cheesecake Factory have recently become the most criticized brands on digital platforms, often tagged with the label 'not worth the price.'
The chasms in service standards and the weakening of communication with customers are steering consumers away from these giant chains and towards local and boutique establishments. Experts warn that should these major brands ignore these warning signals, they risk completely losing customer loyalty in the long run.
