Carving Mountains for Doomsday: Ultra-Rich Build Luxury Vaults in Swiss Alps
As global uncertainties escalate, the ultra-wealthy are taking their 'doomsday' preparations to a luxurious level. Instead of investing in projects that could save humanity, the world's richest individuals are safeguarding their antique Ferraris, gold, and expensive wines in colossal underground vaults, constructed hundreds of meters beneath the Swiss Alps.
A colossal network of underground cellars is being carved beneath the Brünig Pass, near the village of Lungern in Switzerland.
The Brünig Mega Safe project, spearheaded by Swiss businessman Thomas Gasser, comprises approximately 20 special giant vaults, buried more than 100 meters beneath solid rock.
Access to this complex, whose security level is said to rival that of the Swiss National Bank, is subject to extremely stringent conditions. The future entrance location of the facility is being kept a closely guarded secret, and those wishing to gain entry will have to pass through undisclosed security screenings and covert checkpoints.
These underground caves, designed to safeguard the most valuable assets of the ultra-wealthy, can each be leased for a duration of 99 years.
The starting price is approximately 1 million Swiss francs (roughly 918,600 pounds sterling).
The shelter project has sparked debates among the modest inhabitants of the town of Lungern. While some townsfolk criticize the project by saying, 'They are building something for people who already have enough money,' others are humorously looking forward to the day when they can watch billionaires' Ferraris on the winding Alpine roads.
It's not just the clients of the Brünig project who are taking precautions against potential societal collapses or disasters in the future.
Mark Zuckerberg: The boss of Meta owns a massive fortified mansion in Hawaii, complete with independent food and water reserves as well as an underground shelter.
Sam Altman and Peter Thiel: Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has revealed that he has an agreement with PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel to escape to Thiel's secluded mansion in New Zealand in the event of a major global catastrophe.
