Can Money Buy Happiness? Science Finds the Answer
The question that has puzzled humanity for centuries, 'Does money bring happiness?', has this time moved beyond a philosophical debate and been entirely based on scientific, mathematical data. A study conducted by Purdue University, based on global income data, mapped the critical 'satisfaction points' where money ceases to bring happiness, country by country.
Iceland is the country where happiness comes at the highest price, while Ethiopia offers it at the cheapest.
According to global studies, Northern Europe has emerged as the region where money ceases to provide additional peace or satisfaction at the highest threshold. The results of the research crowned Iceland as the 'most expensive country in terms of happiness,' with a satisfaction point at an annual income of $163,579. Following Iceland are Australia and Switzerland, with respective satisfaction thresholds at $161,302 and $154,504. It appears that individuals living in these countries require a fortune to completely rid themselves of economic concerns.
On the flip side, we find the continent of Africa. Ethiopia stands out as the country where people reach maximum peace and psychological satisfaction with the lowest income, with a threshold of merely $10,176 annually.
The happiness threshold of money in Turkey: 102,000 TL per month.
One of the most striking data on the global map prepared by Purdue University pertains to Turkey. According to scientific data, for an individual in Turkey to leave economic worries behind and reach the maximum peace that money can buy, they need to earn $37,222 per year.
As of June 2026, when calculated based on current exchange rates, this amount corresponds to approximately 1,225,000 Turkish Liras annually. In other words, the monthly cost of reaching complete economic satisfaction in Turkey has been determined to be an average net of 102,000 TL. The most striking part of the study is this: no matter how much a citizen earns beyond this threshold, the additional income does not make a noticeable difference in daily happiness levels or perceived quality of life. In other words, this figure is accepted as the ceiling of 'happiness that money can buy' in Turkey.
The data from other countries included in the study also provide a summary of the power balances in the global economy. The happiness threshold in Canada is recorded as $113,755, in the United Kingdom as $120,248, and in Japan as $73,661. Interestingly, the happiness threshold in Russia, which shares the same level with Turkey, is also $37,222, while in Brazil, another emerging economy, it was observed that citizens can reach maximum peace with $20,930.
