The ancient city of Alexander the Great has finally been discovered.

Thanks to the Charax Spasinou Project, an ancient settlement founded by Alexander the Great and lost for many years has been unearthed. Researchers, who reached the ruins in southern Iraq, announced that this city had been buried under sands and changing river beds for centuries. The city could only be detected with the help of advanced technology.
It is reported that Alexander the Great had this city built around 324 BC and its name is referred to in ancient sources as 'Alexandria on the Tigris'. The city, located in a strategic position, was identified in the Jebel Khayyaber region in southern Iraq.
An international team led by Stefan R. Hauser from the University of Konstanz conducted the search. Instead of traditional excavation methods, they employed high-resolution geophysical scans and unmanned aerial vehicles. Consequently, a detailed map of the structures beneath the soil was drawn up.
It was revealed that the city plan was largely preserved.

The findings suggest that the settlement sprawls over an area of approximately 6.5 square kilometers. It is believed that the city boasts a systematic grid of streets, defensive walls, temples, production areas, and extensive residential blocks. Moreover, the port structure and canal system are thought to have played a pivotal role in the region's maritime and river trade.
According to researchers, the city's disappearance was entirely due to natural causes. It is speculated that the shifting course of the Tigris River over time severed the settlement from its water sources and trade routes. Changes in river beds and the accumulation of alluvial deposits could also have gradually buried the city. Consequently, the city may have been abandoned and forgotten over centuries.
In the years to come, it is anticipated that more intricate details about this city will emerge.
