A multitude of users, particularly on platforms like Reddit and TikTok, argue that having a roommate has become a necessity due to soaring rents.
One user expressed satisfaction with their living arrangement, stating, 'I'm quite happy living with my roommate. It allows me to save a significant amount of money.'
Another user, who claims to earn $200,000 annually, shared their perspective, 'I lived alone once, but realized it was an unnecessary expense. I plan to continue living with my friend until I'm in a serious relationship.'
Yet another user explained the practicality of their situation, caring for elderly parents and often away on business trips, they found it illogical to pay rent for an often vacant home.
According to data shared by the roommate platform Diggz, men tend to continue living with roommates at older ages compared to women.
In New York, the median age for men seeking roommates is 26, while for women it's 24. Across the US, however, it's 28 for men and 26 for women.
Rany Burstein, the CEO of the company, admits that he lived alone in his youth to impress women, but looking back, he doesn't believe it was the right decision.
According to Burstein, living with a roommate in today's economic conditions isn't a sign of failure, but rather a sensible financial strategy. He even suggests that he would have preferred to use the money he spent on living alone to invest or buy a house.
'I Don't Want to Share My Private Space'
23-year-old Ciara O'Reilly believes that living alone gives the impression of having a more independent and settled life. She also mentions that having a private space during meetups can make the relationship easier.
However, O'Reilly emphasizes that living alone doesn't automatically make someone a good partner, nor does having a roommate mean that everyone is ready for a relationship.
31-year-old Cassie Leigh, on the other hand, takes a completely different approach to the subject.
'I'm in a relationship with a man, not his roommates,' says Leigh, who has had serious problems in the past due to her partner's roommates. She recounts a relationship where they had to move in with her boyfriend's family due to his roommate's health problems, and another where bedbugs infesting the apartment caused both financial and psychological issues.
For these reasons, she expresses that not having established one's own living arrangement, especially after the age of 30, is a significant red flag for her.
However, the common point in the social media debate is this: Due to rising living costs, living with a roommate is no longer seen as out of the ordinary. While some view this as a lack of independence, others see it as a financially conscious choice. Ultimately, personal expectations and relationship dynamics determine the final decision.
