The kitchen is one of the most accident-prone areas of the home. Even a brief moment at the stove can turn a small flame into a blaze in seconds if something goes wrong. What’s more, many of us don’t realize until it’s too late that one of our attempts to put out a fire could actually make things worse.
A woman shared footage of a sudden flare-up while she was cooking. As the flames leapt up without warning, she didn’t know what to do. The shocking scene left viewers horrified.

What to Do in the Event of a Kitchen Fire
When a fire breaks out in the kitchen, the first instinct is often to grab whatever is nearby and throw it on the flames. But that split-second reaction can turn a small pan fire into a fireball that engulfs the entire kitchen. Pouring water onto burning oil can cause the water to sink beneath the oil and vaporize almost instantly, sending burning oil flying in every direction. Fine, combustible powders such as flour can also ignite in a sudden flash if they’re blown into the air and come into contact with a flame.
So what should you do instead? First, turn off the heat. Then cover the burning pan with a lid of the right size or a damp cloth to cut off the fire’s oxygen supply. Even after the flames go out, don’t remove the cover right away; doing so can prevent the oil from catching fire again. Trying to move the pan or leaning over the flames can result in serious burns. If the fire starts to spread, get out of the kitchen and call 112.
