Although rugs are among the most frequently used items in our homes, their edges can start to curl over time or after they’ve been left folded or rolled up for a long while. Not only does this spoil the look of a room, but it can also create a tripping hazard, turning a minor annoyance into a problem that eventually leads people to replace the rug.

A video shared on social media showed how ice cubes can help flatten a curled rug edge. A woman lined the edge with ice cubes, and as they melted, the curled section appeared to settle back into place. The simple trick caught the attention of others dealing with the same problem.

The idea behind this method is simple. As the ice cubes melt, they gradually add moisture to the curled edge of the rug. That moisture loosens the fibers, which have stiffened from staying in the same position for so long, as well as the backing underneath. The cubes lined up along the edge also press the curled section down toward the floor, helping the rug return to its original flat shape. The main advantage of using ice is that it releases water slowly and in a controlled way, rather than all at once. By dampening only the curled area without soaking the rug, you can also reduce the risk of color bleeding and unpleasant odors.

There are a few things to keep in mind when trying this method. Once the cubes have melted completely, blot up any remaining moisture with a dry towel. You can place a flat, heavy object, such as a book, on the rug’s edge until it has dried fully. On hardwood or laminate floors, it’s a good idea to tuck a towel underneath the edge to stop water from seeping beneath the rug. For delicate rugs made of materials such as wool or silk, test the method first on a small, inconspicuous corner. Results may vary from one rug to another, but the technique tends to work best on synthetic rugs with a low pile.
