Viral Footage Shows Swarm of Rats Overrunning a Metro Station in Paris
Paris, one of the world’s most visited cities, is renowned for its rich history and grand boulevards. Known as the City of Love, it welcomes millions of tourists every year. Yet behind its magnificent façade lies a longstanding problem that continues to make headlines: Paris’s battle with rats remains one of the city’s most persistent challenges. The issue has also caught the attention of visitors from abroad.
Footage recorded by a passenger at Château Rouge metro station in the French capital showed numerous rats roaming the platform. The images quickly made the rounds on social media, leaving viewers horrified.

Paris’s rat problem is nothing new.
Paris City Hall launched a comprehensive action plan to keep the rat population under control in 2017, and it has been regularly updated ever since. Despite carrying out more than 7,000 pest-control operations a year, officials acknowledge that rat numbers are rising in some parts of the city.
The Metro is one of the places where rats are most often spotted: food scraps provide an easy meal, while the tracks, tunnels and corners offer plenty of places to hide. Château Rouge, beneath Boulevard de Barbès in the 18th arrondissement, is also one of Paris’s busiest stations. More than six million passengers enter the station each year, and footage showed how its platform turns into a thoroughfare for rats once commuters have left. Unsurprisingly, the scenes also triggered many people’s phobias.
