According to a local resident, many civilizations lived here over the centuries.

Local resident Bülent Tekeli, who shows visitors around, said the site is Güzelyurt Underground City No. 2 and is considered the first and only underground city in the region with a toilet. According to Bülent Tekeli, the structure has never been restored and remains in its original condition.

Bülent Tekeli said the city was used over time by peoples including the Hittites and the Byzantines, and most recently by Greek residents until 1924. After they left the area, the underground city was used as a storeroom and shelter. He added that none of the many other underground cities he has visited in the region have a toilet.
