39-year-old Kai Sato set sail alone from Catalina Island in California on June 7. However, two weeks later, his boat's mast broke, his fuel ran out, and his phone completely died. Cut off from the world, Sato drifted in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for weeks. The young sailor's struggle to survive, which ended with his rescue about a month later, was inspiring.

For 39-year-old Kai Sato, who set out alone to the Pacific Ocean, the journey turned into an unexpected situation within a few weeks. The mast of the sailor's boat, who set off from off the coast of California, broke, his fuel ran out, and his phone's battery died. Without any means of communication, Sato began to drift in the open sea.
'I Thought I Wouldn't Survive'
As days passed, the currents took Sato's boat away from the routes used by ships. The sailor, describing his experiences, said that he lost hope for a while, cried for days, and felt like a 'motionless target' in the middle of the ocean.
But fortunately, after a few days, he decided to fight again. Using his limited resources, he sought solutions to get his boat working again.
He Tried to Repair His Boat in the Middle of the Ocean
Utilizing PVC pipes and canoe paddles to make the damaged sailboat usable again, Sato developed temporary solutions on his boat.
When the food with him decreased, Sato consumed the oatmeal left on the boat, and then fed on fish and squid that fell onto his boat. To meet his drinking water needs, he collected condensation drops formed from seawater.
Rescued by a Container Ship
Sato's rescue took place when a container ship heading towards Hawaii noticed him on July 21.
The crew of the ship, owned by Pasha Hawaii company, reached the damaged sailboat and initiated a rescue operation. After two attempts, Sato was taken aboard the ship and given water, food, and clothes.
Despite the incident he experienced, he plans a new sea journey.
Staying with a relative in Hawaii, Kai Sato now announced that he wants to go to the Philippines with a larger boat.
